Eggs sold per kilo

ANGELES CITY — The Department of Agriculture (DA) here has initiated actions toward selling eggs on a per kilo basis in all markets in Central Luzon.

The move is connected with the National Government’s initiative that seeks to do away with the “per piece,” “tumpok” or “per tray” sale of eggs.

The DA here held an Egg Consultative Meeting dubbed as “Changing the Trading System of Eggs in the Philippines” at the Lewis Grand Hotel here recently.

DA Regional Director Redentor Gatus stressed that the selling of eggs per kilo would benefit traders, consumers, and egg producers.

Currently, eggs are sold according to quality, size, and color.

With the new system, he said egg prices would be more stable and egg producers would be able to meet projected sales to ease out production costs.

In the pre-implementation stage of the said program, the DA is set to conduct consultative meetings and dialogues with stakeholders so as to devise acceptable strategies and set up a Project Monitoring and Evaluation System.

Gatus said that coordination with concerned government agencies would be put in place to ensure the thorough implementation of the new system.

The DA will also launch a massive information campaign “to heighten the realization on the benefits one can derive from the per kilo system.”

“There is a big difference between farm gate prices compared to retail prices of eggs.  In the sale of eggs per kilo there would be more fair prices on eggs regardless of size,” Gatus said.

Director Arthur Baron of the National Federation of Egg Producers in the Philippines (NFEPP) said with the per kilo system, the time and manpower energy consuming task of classifying eggs according to size would no longer be necessary.

According to Baron, classifying eggs sometimes results to damaging eggs.

He added that the new system “would curve out bad practices of retailers and traders on the selling of eggs in the market like fraudulent per piece trading of eggs.”

This would also expedite the monitoring and marketing of eggs. (Ian Ocampo Flora)

Davao agri store goes greener

WITH the environment taking multiple blows from all other industries worldwide and the country’s carbon footprint getting bigger by the minute, one agricultural dealer in Davao holds its ground and decides to even the odds a little bit and go organic all the way.

Tilson Trade, to date, is the only 100 percent agri-organic store in Davao City. Its wide array of fungicide, pesticide, foliar and composted fertilizers is purely organic delivering the same growth quality as its chemical-based counterparts but definitely without the harmful effects to humans, animals and to the general environment — a plus factor the world surely needs in these trying times.

“All our products are sourced out from nature itself, processed and then introduced back to nature as plant boosters among others,” Tilson Trade operations manager Paul Lumbre explained.

Its banner product Pag-Asa Organic Fertilizer, for one, is a product of fish and cow droppings processed under very strict and advanced technology. Once introduced back into the soil, it restores and maintains soil richness to provide necessary nutrients to plants without the environmental trade-offs usually associated with chemical-based fertilizers.

“It’s the microorganisms in our fertilizers that keep the soil as rich as ever. This means lesser re-fertilization within each cycle that translates to bigger profit/yield to our local farmers,” Lumbre said.

Tilson Trade is also the first to innovate its packaging into smaller 2-kg. packs which makes handling easier and the cost more affordable by the local market. These smaller packages are becoming a hit among household fertilizer users who find the standard 50 kg. sacks cumbersome and too costly for gardening use.

It is this marketing savvy that brought its products closer to the city farmers and businessmen alike.

Their products are sold at NCCC Mall Supermarket, Chua’s Orchid Garden inside NCCC Mall, Garden Classic, SM City Mall, Davao Flower Garden and Tiange Village across SM City Mall in Matina.

Tilson Trade holds store at Omnor Building on Buhangin Diversion Road. It is a small, unassuming structure with big dreams of one day making it big in the industry. They take pride in starting local initiatives to promote affordable, sustainable and environment-friendly farming methods. For interested parties Tilson Trade communication lines are open beyond store hours: (082) 302-6563 or 0908-677-9111. (BOT)

Old slaughterhouse area for sale

Old slaughterhouse area for sale

THE Iloilo City Government is thinking of selling the soon-to-be vacated old slaughterhouse in Molo district to investors interested in putting up a medium-rise hotel or similar business venture.

If not, the City could also heed the recommendation of Nathaniel Guillergan of the City Planning and Development Office to convert the structure into an extension building of City Hall.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said he is looking for ways to derive revenues from the area, which has ceased offering slaughter services after the completion of a new slaughterhouse in Quintin Salas in Jaro district.

Put up more than a year ago, the Double A slaughterhouse is now used for the slaughter of small animals. More than 300 pigs are slaughtered in Double A daily, generating income of P1 million for the City Government.

Recently, Treñas signed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Agriculture for a grant of more than P11 million from the Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (Acef) that will be used to upgrade Double A in Jaro and purchase equipment for slaughter services of big animals like cows and carabaos there.

The mayor said that with new equipment in place before the end of the year, the slaughterhouse income is expected to double by next year.

In his report to the mayor, Guillergan said the entrance to the old slaughter house is a road that has been encroached upon by a widened street and concrete bridge in the Molo and Mandurriao districts. Illegal settlers occupy the banks of the Batiano River and the old slaughterhouse perimeter.

The Molo slaughterhouse has a land area of 3,163 square meters with fair market value of P8,283 per square meter. Its total worth is P28.19 million.

He also said the plan to convert the old slaughterhouse into a wet market is problematic due to the constricted entrance that could be widened only by demolishing some houses of informal settlers.

Another observation is the tendency of liquid and solid wastes from the structure to flow to the Batiano River, resulting in environmental issues.

The existence of a nearby shopping mall and the Molo Public Market will make the wet market second choice for market goers, thereby reducing its viability and feasibility.

Finally, the cost of property and added improvements will make the wet market proposal a high risk in terms of cost vis-a-vis benefits.

Dangwa Flower Marketplace in Sampaloc near UST

This is a story of a bus terminal that has paved way to a promising industry today.  The Dangwa Bus Terminal situated in Sampaloc, Manila is now a by-word among flower shop owners and flower enthusiasts.  This is the place to visit for the freshest and cheapest flowers produced by ornamental growers all over the country.

Flowers have become a symbol of different expressions, be it for lovers to make their loved-ones feel special, expression of love, hope, and condolences, personal greetings such as congratulations or just simple “hi’s” and “hello’s”.  Or for ornamental enthusiasts, you’ll have a grasp of plants for indoor decorations or for outdoor landscape architectures.

The Bulaklakan ng Maynila, popularly known as the Dangwa flower market, has been refurbished and popularized by the Local Government Unit of Manila.  The ornamental industry takes it bloom as this “bagsakan” area (trading post) helps showcase flowers and leaves for all occasions with the help of shippers from Baguio City, Davao City, Tagaytay City, Cotabato City and Laguna.  Mums and roses are popularly grown in Baguio City as gerberas are in Tagaytay City.  As decorative pieces, asters are supplied by Laguna.

Traders deliver wide varieties of flowers to the Bus Terminal almost everyday during “bagsakan” time at 4 o’clock in the afternoon.  Retailers and wholesalers would go to their “suki” (consumers) and pay either in cash or in checks.

Wide choices of stalls could provide buyers bouquets, wreaths, corsages, and other flower arrangements.  Peak seasons are Valentine’s Day, All Saints’ Day and recently, Mother’s Day.  This has been a great help for event organizers/planners for their entourage arrangements, catering services during debuts, weddings, birthday parties, baptisms, and others providing them choices for their motif decoration pieces.

Cheaper at its best
For man courting ladies, popular choices are roses, daisies, gerbera, and varieties of Malaysian mums.  A bouquet of roses would cost roughly P 500.00 in private stores or in malls but one can have them at Dangwa only P 200.00.

Malaysiam mums would cost P120.00 and anthuriums at P115.00.  Some of the flowers available are orchids (P400.00/bundle), chrysanthemums, gerbera (P200.00/dozen), paper roses (P250/3 pieces), and Ping-pong (P120/dozen).

Flower arrangements
Showcased at the Dangwa bus terminal are not only flowers but also varieties of leaves used as decorative accessories in flower arrangements.  Podo, Kamuning, Wondering tube, Cypress, Honey Lemon, Rosal, Tibatib, and Bottle grass top the list.  They also use Anahaw, San Francisco, Jamaica, Fish Tail, and Pormosa.

To further enhance arrangements, florists use Japanese papers, ribbons, flower foam, plastic covers, and color sprays for accent and to fit desired color of the flower.

A family enterprise
An initial capital of P 10,000.00 could generate income not less than P100,000.00 per month.  Ms. Emma Petate has proved successful in 20 years of business.  She has expanded and developed a family enterprise.  Her two children were able to establish their own stores, one also situated in Dangwa (Mariel’s Flower Shop) and the other located in Parañaque.  You’ll hear hosts saying “compliments to Mariel’s Flower Shop” A.S.A.P ‘07 in ABS-CBN.  Yes, they’ve been popular now providing A.S.A.P.’s guests with bouquets.

The Dangwa flower market not only provides flower enthusiasts and ornamental growers with the freshest and cheapest flowers but more so a great venue for entrepreneurs for a profitable business.

Try to visit Dangwa and you’ll see how relaxing it is to see flowers everywhere.  Flowers are made available 24 hours a day, having no worries what time to come, providing you the cheapest and best flowers in town.
