The prospect of growing Macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia) for its nut production in the Philippines has not yet been studied because it does not fruit in our tropical climate. But how come Hawaii which has a tropical climate can grow Macadamia trees and fruit very well in fact they have several superior varieties. We are still importing Macadamia Nuts in Australia while Japan is the largest importer of Macadamia Nuts.

I’ve been asking around for years now if they fruit in our tropical climate and I had positive feedback in fact some have already planted for trial and experimentation specially in Bukidnon in Cagayan De Oro. There have been plantings in Negros Occidental, Davao and Laguna that all confirmed that the trees have fruited from seeds. In my research here, Macadamia trees that has been grown from seeds fruit after 6 years. Problem with seedlings, there is variations in terms of quality and production. So there is really a need for trial and experiment to select good varieties that fruit very well in our Philippine climate. If we could do this, we could lessen our importation requirements from other countries and be sustainable.
